Me Talk Pretty One Day

For my drive to Oregon and back last weekend, I bought an audiobook through iTunes. The book I bought was the abridged version of David Sedaris’ Me Talk Pretty One Day. It’s a collection of entertaining essays. I’d heard about Sedaris a number of time from various people and seen him listed on random people’s MySpaces even. The first time his work was recommended to me though was by my friend Amy who I knew in Bayreuth. I actually didn’t know much about the author except that his writing is apparently entertaining and that he’s gay. It was quite entertaining for all sorts of reasons though. He largely grew up in North Carolina, so there were lots of references to my former state which I found amusing.

I managed to find a link to one of the more amusing NC-related essays here. Definitely worth checking out, especially if you’re one of my UNC peeps.

  1. Just finished reading the Sedaris article - ouch! It sure does seem like a typical North Carolina encounter… {sigh} Not sure how much of it is his comedic interpretation and how much was real, but speaking as someone who’s HAD speech therapy (lisp AND nasality), I’d have to say that Agent Samson couldn’t have been very experienced in doing therapy work… she sure would have encountered a lot of rethithtanthe :-) from me if she’d taken the approach she did… Come to think of it, though, my therapists (3rd grade to 8th ?? can’t remember clearly) reported that I was a little resistant, too… but the nasality’s mostly gone and the lisp’s gone, so I guess I gave in at some point… maybe those of us with “OGT”s at an early age don’t want to lose them? {smile}
