American Football invented in Quebec?

I came across this fascinating link today. McGill University has a little piece on their role in the history of football. Apparently, football is derived from soccer. In the late 19th century, people started experimenting with various rules. A pair of matches played in Montreal between Harvard and McGill in 1874 using “McGill rules” are apparently regarded as the first which were played in a manner fairly similar to what eventually became modern American football.
